by Ibn Sina
“Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb” (The Canon of Medicine) is a monumental medical encyclopedia completed around 1025 CE (416 AH) by Ibn Sina. This comprehensive work synthesizes Greek, Arabic, and Persian medical knowledge alongside Ibn Sina’s own clinical observations. Organized into five books, it covers fundamental medical principles, materia medica, diseases of specific body parts, systemic illnesses, and compound drugs. For over 600 years, the Canon served as the definitive medical textbook in the Islamic world and Europe, its Latin translation (completed in the 12th century) being a cornerstone in European medical education until the 17th century.
